The prepared environment is a core principle of the Montessori method because it is essentially the child’s primary educator. Dr. Montessori believed that, if given the right environment, every child is capable of greatness. An environment that encourages learning and exploration, that provides opportunities to practice, make mistakes and grow.
Following Montessori principles, our spaces are created with the child’s needs and abilities in mind. Our focus is on accessibility, encouraging independence, offering freedom of movement and choice, promoting a sense of order and structure, encouraging self-regulation and cognitive development, building confidence and inspiring learning.
Our spaces are custom designed to meet the needs of the families we work with and are inspired by their unique dynamics.
We aim for clutter-free spaces that promote order and structure. This means functional and organized spaces, with a limited number of toys and materials out at any given time, and where everything has a place. In such an environment, the child is encouraged to learn where things go and contribute to maintaining the space tidy.
Our spaces are fairly minimalist so as to prevent distractions and overwhelm. Instead, we aim for peaceful spaces with the right kind and amount of stimulation to enable the child to gradually increase their concentration span.
We aim to create spaces that are harmonious and engage the senses, encouraging the use of artwork at the child’s eye level, rich textures and attractive activities.
We aim for spaces that reflect nature and reality, featuring natural materials, appropriately-sized real world tools, as well as realistic images where appropriate.
Our approach is eco-conscious and environmentally-friendly. As much as possible we will try to work with what families already have around the home and advocate reducing, reusing and recycling materials.
We believe that by incorporating these design principles into your home you can create a supportive and stimulating environment that encourages children to be independent, responsible and self-directed learners.
