Counting with DIY Insect Cards

This activity is so easy to set up. I simply filled one of the Trofast bins with some colored rice and the wooden numbers from our Ikea number puzzle. On the other side of the table I spread DIY insect counting cards.

I was having a bit of trouble finding cards with just the quantity (without the number) so I made my own (1-10) with the insects A is most familiar with.

Introducing math concepts with sensory play is a fun way of getting your toddler exposed to these concepts in a no-pressure environment. My daughter was 27 months at the time of this activity. She was still working on counting to 10 and making the connections between numerals and quantities.

This activity helped her practice counting, number recognition, matching numerals to quantities and develop vocabulary (insect names).

Cleaning up is part of the learning process, so make sure to encourage your child to tidy up after they finish playing. Model how to do it until your child feels confident enough to initiate the tidying up process independently.
