Flower Arranging using a Funnel

This classic Montessori practical life activity is perfect for Spring and has so many benefits.

It helps develop:

🌸 Fine and gross motor skills

🌸 Hand-eye coordination

🌸 Control of movement

🌸 Practical life skills (pouring, using a funnel)

🌸 Learning a sequence

🌸 Concentration

🌸 Sense of order and aesthetic

We started flower arranging around 16 months with a very simple setup that included a pitcher already filled with water, a vase and the prepared flowers, so all she had to do was pour the water into the vase and place the flowers inside.

At 26 months old we introduced another step (as pictured) by including a funnel. The next step will be to add scissors so she can start to cut the stems as well.

To set your child up for success, provide a pitcher that is appropriately sized. You can view some of our recommended options here

Be sure to gradually increase the number of steps so as to give your child a chance to scaffold skills and learn the sequence.

Cleaning up is part of the learning process, so make sure to encourage your child to tidy up after they finish playing. Model how to do it until your child feels confident enough to initiate the tidying up process independently.

Bringing play to life:

  • How about inviting your little one(s) to help you with the flower arrangement in your home? Can your child help you find a special place to display these flowers?
