Whale Study Unit – pattern and letter matching

For this activity I used a whale study unit from @mymegabundles. A smaller version of the pattern matching activity was on A’s shelf at the time so here I also combine it with some phonics work. For that I added some wooden letters so we could sound out the first letter together and then match them.

My daughter was more fascinated by the whale figurines than the actual work. 🙂  She spent a few minutes playing with the whale figurines and, only after making them swim in the air together for a while and inspecting them closer with the magnifying glass did she even look at the cards.

She has been fascinated with the blowholes ever since we talked about (and watched a few videos on) how whales breathe air through them ☺️.

We talked about the different types of whales, their names and certain characteristics, so there were plenty of opportunities for new vocabulary, practicing phonics, strengthening visual discrimination through pattern matching and so much more.

Cleaning up is part of the learning process, so make sure to encourage your child to tidy up after they finish playing. Model how to do it until your child feels confident enough to initiate the tidying up process independently.
