We started (what will hopefully become) a little herb garden for our balcony! To celebrate Mother Earth I wanted to do something lasting that A could care for and watch grow.
I had a bunch of seeds that came with a book I purchased a few months ago, got some soil and an egg carton from the recycling bin and that was it! We also love this kid’s gardening kit. It comes with everything you need to get started, including a variety of
seeds and an illustrated booklet with step-by-step instructions to make
it easy and fun to learn how to grow your little garden.
I had A scoop the soil into the egg carton cups, carefully place the seeds into the individual cups, cover them with more soil and then water it with a spray bottle. She loved watering the most I think . We planted parsley, peppers and basil.
It was our first time trying to grow herbs indoors. This activity gave A the opportunity to practice a number of practical life as well as fine motor skills. On a more fundamental level though, planting a seed teaches a child about patience, empathy, appreciation for life in all its forms… simply put, love. And now she will get to take care of it, water it when it needs and watch it grow.
